Beach-A great stretch of beach that is excellent to take a long walk and swim. Charges (extra) - Spa services, Internet access, golf and horseback riding would be extra. Distances- Located in the Playacar Resort area and about a 20 minute walk into Playa del Carmen or a short 5 minute cab ride for only $5 each way. I really like Playacar. It has this secure upscale feeling to it. I felt very safe walking outside the resort in the evening. Entertainment on Property -Varied entertainment and activities during the day and evening. They have a different show each night in the theatre. Fitness Area - An adequate fitness area with machines and treadmills.
Getting Around- Very easy to get into Playa del Carmen and back. If you do not feel like walking, a short cab ride is only $5 each way. Internet Access -One of the few properties where you can bring your laptop and have Wi Fi access from the lobby bar. It is expensive but if you need it, it is available. Jackets and Ties- Keep them at home, but bring slacks and polo shirt for dinner in the A la Carte restaurants. Kids- All the kids activities are across the little side street at the Riu Tequila. Lighting-The resort is well laid out and well lit at night. Beautiful grounds at night. Medical Services-On call medical services. Negatives- The one negative is having to make your dinner reservations at the a-la-carte restaurants between 11am and 1pm. Since I was down there working each day, I was never at the resort at that time to make reservations. Make sure you talk to the Maitre D the evening before if you plan on taking a day trip the following day.
Opportunities-You may use the facilities at the Riu Playacar, Riu Tequila and Riu Yucatan. Pool-Two large pools, where one is for all the activities and the other is more quiet. The one that has the activities also has the swim up pool bar. Protection-There are in room safes but they are the old fashioned ones that require a key. One more key for me to lose. I hope they eventually swap those out for the electronic safes. Recreation-Tennis, volleyball, sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking .....should I go on? Rooms-Of all the Riu resorts, the Palace has nice oversize rooms with sitting areas. Also the double beds are not pushed close together which is a complaint I have at the other Riu's. Shopping-Small gift shop on property. Plenty of shopping in Playa del Carmen. Terrain-Very flat and spread out. Tipping-Not required but as with any service industry, if your bartender, room service attendant or concierge really shines, they will appreciate the small gratuity since most people will not be tipping anyway.
View-Many of the rooms have courtyard and pool views. If you can get the rooms at the end, you would have a great ocean view. Weather-December through May are the driest months. September through November are the wettest months. WOW Factor-Upscale and the level of service. They go out of the way to make you feel welcome. X-Y-Z-For people who want to treat themselves to a little bit more luxury, the Riu Palace fits the bill |
